Ono ice, a new food truck featuring Hawaiian shaved ice, opened today outside of Saturn on 41st St. in Avondale. Birmingham Native Rebecca Davis started Ono Ice as a side project in 2011, mostly focusing on pop-ups at satellite locations around the city. After starting a Kickstart campaign in 2015, Davis was able to fulfill her goal: to raise $25,000 to fund the purchase of a vintage RV or ice cream truck to be converted into a one-of-a-kind shave ice truck. The truck made its first public appearance today.
The small but efficient menu had a great variety and offered something for everyone.
We ordered the Vanilla Snowcream to start. The ice was well-shaved and didn’t contain any hard pieces that required chewing. The snowcream flavor was delicious and truly reminiscent of homemade snowcream. This one was a hit!
Next we had the Strawberry. It was mildly sweet and slightly tangy. Quite delicious.
Finally, we tried the Lemongrass Ginger, which was amazing! Something about the gingery flavor made it so light and refreshing on a hot summer day.
According to the One Ice Website, Davis said, “Growing up in Birmingham, my favorite time of year was always summer and one of my favorite summertime activities was a trip to the shave ice stand. There was just something special about that sweet, icy treat that embodied the feeling of summer to me.”
We will definitely be back for more Ono Ice this summer!
