Los Valedores: The Taco Truck of Homewood

Los Valedores has been around for a quite some time. Located in an abandoned parking lot near the intersection of Green Springs Highway and Oxmoor Road in Homewood, the taco truck is more of a permanent fixture than it is a restaurant-on-wheels.

A frequent visitor of the taco truck said:

“Los Valedores is just one of the many restaurant options Homewood has to offer. We are so proud to have authentic, international flavors at our fingertips, run by hardworking entrepreneurs that give so much back to the community.”

-Meredith Drennan, Homewood Chamber of Commerce Executive Director

The menu has most of the traditional taqueria offerings, with a few less-commonly seen additions.

A Yelper by the name of Rob S. got us interested in the tacos. In his review, he said:

“They had any tacos you could want (steak, pork, chicken, chorizo, and a couple others). All tacos were $2 each. Each taco was filled with a ton of meat and came with onion and cilantro plus a lime on the side.” (Rob S., Yelp Bham)

We decided to try the tacos first; start with the basics. We ordered an assortment. Within 5 minutes we were handed this steaming-hot box. All of the tacos were fantastic, but the chorizo was the clear winner because the chorizo itself was so tasty. img_5424

Next, we tried the Flautas de Pollo: deep fried, chicken-stuffed corn tortillas topped with lettuce, tomato, queso fresca, sour cream, avocado slices and two fried eggs.  Both salsa rojo and salsa verde were served alongside. The salsa rojo has a deep chipotle flavor. Both sauces have a good bit of kick! This dish was awesome and the fried eggs were a great addition!

On our next visit, we tried the Shrimp Ceviche Tostada, a delicious ceviche topped with freshly-sliced avocado. This was truly one of the best ceviches we’ve ever tried.

We also tried the Sopes, which come in a set of three. The base is made from a circle of fried masa  (ground maize soaked in lime, also used as the basis for tamales and tortillas) with pinched sides. This is then topped with your choice of meat, refried black beans and crumbled cheese, lettuce, and sour cream. We tried them with al pastor, chicken, and asada. This dish was also really good. The black beans certainly set it apart from other dishes.

Los Valedores is, in or opinion, the best taco truck in Birmingham! We will be back again and again.
