The Sour Room officially closed at the end of December in preparation for a move to another location. The establishment is currently located at 4022 Third Avenue South in the strip adjacent to Avondale Brewing (next door to Wasabi Juan’s), but will be moving to the back portion of the former Demarais Automotive space between the Avondale Brewing taproom and Post Office Pies, a location much more accessible to the main brewery’s courtyard.
The Sour Room, a tasting room entirely dedicated to the unique beers like barrel aged saisons and sour beers, is a staple amongst local beer lovers. YELP reviewers agree:
“This is definitely a hidden gem for sour lovers. It’s a quaint little place with a knowledgeable bartender ready to meet your needs.”
-Keeshia L., YELP
“As lovers of sour beer, THIS is the place. They specialize in small-batch sours, and do so brilliantly! We tried a flight of 4 of their offerings on our visit, and were completely blown away. Blend #4 is AMAZING!”
-Matt K., YELP
When developing The Sour Room, Avondale drew a lot of inspiration from Wicked Weed Brewing in Asheville, North Carolina, which opened a satellite tasting room devoted to sours in 2014 called the Funkatorium.
We visited Funkatorium last fall and saw many resemblances between the two, from the half-barrel chalkboard menu to the funky beer offerings.
Sour-lovers don’t despair, while the changes take place the main tap room will feature three or four offerings from The Sour Room.
