The Cowfish: Offering Both the Best Sushi AND the Best Burger in Town

By: Mandy Williams

The Cowfish is a one-of-a-kind dining experience, thriving on its ability to fuse two niche products seamlessly on the same menu – sushi and burgers! All natural, creative and hearty, the burgers entice with fresh ingredients and bold flavors. Fresh, innovative and delicious, the sushi segment of the menu is a unique balance of traditional and unconventional. They also create a fun atmosphere with a bright interior featuring custom artwork and vibrant music.

The Cowfish has a real life cowfish named “Tigger ” who is so special he’s in a small tank of his own located at the hostess station where you check-in.  He’s only about 4 inches long but is a cute little guy and looks just like his life-sized version outside of the front door.

Appetizers

SPICY TOGARASHI SHRIMP Flash fried shrimp in spicy Japanese chili sauce. Served over Asian slaw with pounded ginger sauce.

This dish was worthy of eating on its own as a meal. The perfectly crispy shrimp were paired with a spicy sauce; a mouthwatering combination.

CRAB RANGOON DIP Creamy crab rangoon with parmesan panko crust, wonton crisps, Thai sweet chili sauce and chives

This appetizer is definitely best served amongst several friends.

Cocktails

We were very impressed with the selection and quality of the cocktails: a great selection of liquors, bitters and they have ice spheres and cubes. Definitely one of the best restaurant cocktails we can find outside of local cocktail bars.

BULLEITS & BACON Bulleit Bourbon, cherry heering, orange and angostura bitters, orange peel, candied bacon

THE CUCUMBER MINT-INI Hendrick’s Gin, cucumber, mint, freshly squeezed lime

This drink, similar to a gimlet, was very well-made and super refreshing.

Entrees

The Cowfish offers quite a selection of entrees. We tried a little of everything.

THE JALAPEÑO POPPER SHOW–STOPPER Half-pound beef burger, jalapeño-infused cream cheese, jalapeño bacon, fried jalapeños, jalapeño citrus aioli, lettuce, tomato, fresh sliced jalapeños, brioche bun

This burger was the shining star of our meal at Cowfish; one of the best burgers we’ve ever had. The jalapeño and cream cheese paired deliciously with the perfectly-cooked burger. We weren’t expecting the burger to be this good.

THE ALL-AMERICAN BACON DOUBLE CHEESEBURGOOSHI Seasoned all natural beef, sharp cheddar cheese, white cheddar cheese, applewood bacon, and red onion, wrapped in soy paper and potato strings then flash fried. Topped with ketchup, mustard, dill pickle and Roma tomato. Served atop Cowfish sauce. Served with house seasoned fries

This sushi-burger hybrid was surprisingly good. The potato strings added a nice crunch.

Overall, our dinner at The Cowfish was amazing. YELP users agree, giving the restaurant a solid 4 Stars.

What a fun fusion spot to check out in Birmingham! The vibe here is classy with a twist of fun making it perfect for a casual lunch or to celebrate a special occasion.
